Visual Instrument 1.4

This application exemplifies an intriguing fusion of musical randomness and user interaction, generating an infinite, evolving melody suited for immersive listening. Developed through a collaboration between jazz guitar virtuoso Paul Musso—who contributed guitar recordings of fundamental chords such as F#, D#, C, and G—and visual artist Bryan Leister, who handled programming and graphic design.

The interface responds to up to four simultaneous touches, with each interaction causing collisions that activate one of the pre-recorded chords. Every three seconds, the tonal key randomly shifts among A minor, C major, F major, or G major, thereby adding rhythmic variation. This results in a continuous, soothing melodic sequence that can be enjoyed over extended periods without repetition.

The visual component offers an ambient environment: colorful capsules represent individual touches, while physics-enabled balls inside these capsules correspond to notes. Interacting with a ball produces its sound; additionally, collisions with screen edges also trigger the notes. This creates a dynamic interplay between tactile input, visual stimuli, and musical output.

Originally conceived as an experimental exploration of music theory during an exhibit in Denver—incorporating motion tracking—this project has now been adapted into a touchscreen application, providing an engaging platform for both casual listeners and those interested in the intersection of technology and musical composition.
